Supertemps has hired former JMC air crew controller Deborah Owen to cover recruitment in production, construction and hospitality industries.
It is the first time in the company’s 28-year history that it has employed an industrial specialist, adding to a team that includes commercial, financial and professional and technical recruitment consultants.
Deborah was on duty for JMC during the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. It was her responsibility to ensure crews were available and kept informed of decisions to re-route and cancel flights.
The 39-year-old also needed a cool head when she took charge of more than 120 temporary workers for Vauxhall Motors in Ellesmere Port.
Supertemps snapped her up when they learned she was looking to move back to her native Llandudno, having worked in commercial and industrial sectors for recruitment agencies in Chester.
She said: “Working in Chester made me realise there’s a growing opportunity for recruitment services in North Wales, especially in the industrial sector.
“Even with that opportunity, it’s vital that a recruitment business has a good reputation and a solid base. Supertemps has both these things, and I’m delighted to be a part of it.”
Supertemps director Sarah Ellwood attributed the growing industrial sector to more and more businesses using temporary staff to help them grow.
According to CareerBuilder’s UK Job Forecast survey, 41 per cent of organisations will consider hiring contract or freelance employees in 2008.
Sarah said: “Our experience is that more businesses are using temps to ‘test the water’, which is in line with the national trend".
“By hiring temps through an agency, businesses can meet demand without the hassle of placing job ads, interviewing and selecting, and processing wages and PAYE."
“If demand continues then temps can become permanent employees. If not, employers are under no obligation to keep them on.”
Based in offices in Old Colwyn, Supertemps is accredited with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and is the only local agency to be a member of The Employment Agents Movement (TEAM).
This enables Supertemps to call on other independent agencies outside North Wales if businesses need people with particular skills not available in this area.
